UNICEF, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, was founded on December 11, 1946, in response to the plight of children affected by World War II. Ludwik Rajchman, a Polish bacteriologist, is regarded as its founder and was its first chairman from 1946 to 1950. In modern times, UNICEF provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing country. Around the world, UNICEF responds when emergencies arise in war-torn countries, the aftermath of natural disasters and disease outbreaks.
