Gorgeous Grandma Day

Every July 23 we celebrate Gorgeous Grandma Day. Of course, in their own ways, every Grandma is gorgeous, so of course, it is a day to celebrate your own grannie, or grandmother or nana, or whatever you call that important woman in your life.

According to Happy Days 365, “Alice Solomon came up with the Gorgeous Grandma concept after graduating from college at the age of 50. The former model, beauty queen, newspaper columnist and author was not too fond of being labeled senior citizen the day she turned 50. This Day … is planned to celebrate the spirit and life of all those over the age of 50 who aren’t yet prepared to resign themselves to a quiet life.”

But whether your grandma is 50 or 100, it is a day to celebrate her, and let her know how you feel about her. If you are near enough, visit her, or take her shopping or out to eat. From further away, send a card or email. Cook her favorite meal, or even better, ask her to teach you to make her signature dish. Thank her for all she has meant to you. And if your nanna is gone, why not make yourself her favorite dish as a remembrance, or watch her favorite movie.

If you are a grandma, this is your day. Go out and do something special for yourself. If your age ends in five or zero, you can go to Amazon and get yourself a special T-shirt, which in 2017 says “Gorgeous since 1937” up to “Gorgeous since “1962.” Show the world you are still ready to give it all you’ve got.

So, whether you are a gran, or celebrating a grandma or great grandma, be sure not to let this day go by without acknowledging the specialness of that wonderful older woman in your life, whether she is related by blood or not.
