Think how boring the world would be if we were all the same, and all acted soberly and logically all the time. Well, September 9 is the day to celebrate our uniqueness, our weirdness, if you will, since we all have some spark of originality or weirdness in us.
One of the ultimate expressions of this concept is the Muppets. How often has someone called them weirdos? For instance, in A Muppet Family Christmas,” it’s a recurring phrase. Fozzie’s mother says, “They’re weirdos, Fozzie. But, they’re nice weirdos.” Later, after home movies of the Muppets as babies, Doc says, “Even weirdos are cute when they’re babies.” Or in the Doctor Who episode called “The Lodger,” Craig says, “Has anyone ever told you that you’re a bit weird?” The Doctor replies, “They never really stop.”
Though so many of us spend our lives trying to be normal and fit in, it is the weirdos, those who aren’t afraid to stand out, that change the world. I think of Einstein with his wild hair who gave us the theory of relativity because his mind worked differently than other people’s. Then there is the Internet meme: “I’m not weird, I’m a limited edition.”
I’m glad this day exists, because I’m part of the world of fandom, and we are seen as weird by most of the rest of the world. It is “normal,” to love a sports team and collect baseball cards or other memorabilia and wear team colors, and become emotionally involved in their winning or losing, but if you love something like Doctor Who, and collect that memorabilia, or cosplay like one of the characters, or get emotionally invested in the show and characters, you are considered weird. And, honestly, we’re proud of it.
So let your uniqueness and weirdness shine today. Go out and be an original.

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… The ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.–Steve Jobs
