International Coffee Day

International Coffee Day is a time to celebrate that caffeinated beverage, with events occurring across the world. The first official time this was observed was October 1, 2015, as agreed by the International Coffee Organization and was launched in Milan.

Coffee is made from the seeds or berries of the coffee plant. As a beverage, it has been enjoyed by people around the world for many centuries. Historians believe that coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia. The National Coffee Association relates the legend about coffee’s origin: “The story goes that that Kaldi discovered coffee after he noticed that after eating the berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night. Kaldi reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery, who made a drink with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer.”

From there, coffee spread to the Middle East. European travelers brought the beverage back with them, and by the 17th century, it was popular in Europe. It moved to the New World with European settlers. Besides bringing energy and alertness, coffee brought people together, and many an idea was hatched over a cup of coffee.

According to MarketWatch, Americans drink more coffee than soda, tea and juice combined. They say, “the market for coffee hit 88.8 gallons per capita in 2016, nearly three times more than bottled water.” Worldwide, the numbers are also robust. The International Coffee Organization estimates that during the year October 2015 to September 2016, over 151 million 60 kg. (130 lb.) bags were consumed.

Now, of course, you can get all kinds of coffee from specialized shops. So be sure to have a cup today – I’ll be wishing you well with my cup of tea in hand.
